Help for Foster Parents in Mountain View Community
A few months ago my husband and I were talking about how comfortable we are in our own little world yet how we are feeling challenged to step out in different ways. Not knowing what this would look like we prayed that God would open our eyes and our hearts to the needs of others, close by, and around the world.
One of the ways that we knew we could step out, although it may not be comfortable at all, was to become foster parents. With Grace Fellowship already focused on the Mountain View Community, we see a great opportunity in providing an occasional temporary break (respite) for Mountain View families who are opening their homes to children in the foster care system.
Maybe God has stirred your heart towards foster care but you’ve put it off because you have a house full of children already! Maybe you thought about adoption but haven’t taken that first step to become a foster parent. Maybe the thought of being a foster parent scares you to death! (There are lots of other ways you can be involved at Mountain View).
But maybe you are like us and feel that you could be making a difference in someone’s life by stepping beyond what makes you comfortable. I hope you will think and pray about getting involved and going through the upcoming PATH class offered at Grace starting Oct 1st . This foster parent certification class will be every Monday night for 6 weeks. Although this training will provide full certification for becoming a foster parent our hopes are that we can at least provide respite (a short term break anywhere from one night to a few weeks) to already fostering families in the Mountain View community and beyond.
There are children in the foster care system right here in our city that may not have a place to sleep at night and there are families that need support and love and a break even for a short time. Our prayer is that many families at GFC will open their hearts to this possibility and that God will use us in ways we could never imagine if we just step beyond what makes us comfortable.
What better way to show Gods love to families and children even if it's only for a short time. What would it look like if we opened our homes to children in our community and there was not one child who didn’t have a home and a family? Jesus said, “Whoever loses his life for my sake will find it (Matthew 10:39).
The short term risks of foster care and adoption are huge. The long term risks of LOVE are zero. God will make all grace abound for every days demand. Nothing is impossible with Him. There will be no regrets for parents who love in the power of Christ. May God multiply churches that live out this truth.
Our prayer is that we will be a church that lives in this truth and carries it out into our community and the far corners of the world. Contact the church if you’d like more information on the PATH class or foster parenting.
