building a community to reach a community

A Place of Healing

GFC has been my church family for over a dozen years now. I have attended many Women’s Ministry events through the years but I did not realize the full beauty of being involved in Women’s Ministry until a few months ago.

You see, in the past six months I have walked a valley like none I had before as my marriage of thirty three years ended. Friends that have been made throughout all my years of participation in the Women’s Ministry or service at GFC one by one came to walk with me through my valley. The Lord brought to me something beautiful that had been building for a long time - a sisterhood.

I found myself longing deeply for this Christian community as I wrestled with many emotions. The past Winter Women’s Bible Study could not have been any more of just where I needed to be. The weekly minutes with those women became to me just what the title of the study was “A Place of Healing”. My reading for each week in Joni Eareckson Tada’s book by the same title prepared me to experience such a sweetness each time I gathered with fellow sisters who knew pain – either surviving it or in the midst of it as myself. Even though everyone in the group I did not know personally, it gave me such companionship to battle any loneliness just knowing they too knew suffering.

Joan VanBeveren led us weekly to the Word of God and freshly retold known Bible stories of those who also suffered. The grace and sweet Spirit of God poured all over me with the words she spoke. I was reminded through Joni’s written testimony and the testimonies of people from God’s Word of who God could be to me in my wrestling with the mystery of my suffering and the recognition of God’s ultimate Sovereignty in my life.

The ultimate journey with Christ sometimes takes you down the pathway of suffering. In this world of sin, sickness, disease and death it is inevitable to cross your path. But the question is will you let Christ change you through it and then use you through it? I know answering this question for me as a "Yes" is being made possible by the incredible support of fellow sisters I have at GFC. I highly encourage you to take every opportunity you can to be involved in the Women’s Ministry through Bible Studies or events. You never know what beautiful things God is building in you or for you!
