Day Six - Friday
It's hard to believe our trip has come to a close and that Friday was our last day at Walker park!
As we were preparing for Friday, we felt God leading us in a direction that we were not planning for. Instead of teaching the scheduled lesson, every group member felt that our lesson should be focused on telling the kids the reasons why we came to Alaska and tying that into the salvation story. We broke them up into a boy group and a girl group and Scott shared his testimony with the boys while Brenda shared hers with the girls. We told them that the reason we came was because we love Jesus and we want to tell everyone who He is and how He loved them so much that He died to save them from sin. Since a few children had raised their hands Thursday night proclaiming they had accepted Christ, another focus of Friday was to follow up with those specific kids to make sure they understood what salvation truly meant. As a result, on Friday we had the privilege of handing out Bibles to a handful of kids who either said they were interested and wanted to know more, or had accepted Christ the night before. What an awesome thing to be a part of! Many prayers and thoughts went into preparing for Friday and we are so thankful to God that He orchestrated everything.
When our team was discussing the plan for Friday on Thursday night, we realized that some of us felt like we were leaving a job undone or hadn't "sealed the deal" just yet. Because of this, we talked to our Grace Works host who explained to us how the follow up process works once we leave. He told us that Grace Works engages with these kids year round and that they have specific staff for follow up so that the children continue to receive teaching and encouragement once a church group has left. As a result, a follow up staff member from Grace Works came out to the park on Friday with us and we were able to introduce her to the kids that showed special interest in learning more about Jesus. We now know that these kids will not be neglected, but instead be poured into by people who love and care about them so that they will be enabled to learn more and stand firm.
As a team, we realized we are just pieces of a puzzle. We know that our job was to plant seeds in these kids' lives and that even if we didn't see an immediate result, God would be faithful to complete the work He started in each and every one of them. We are all just so blessed to have been a part of it. All praise, honor, and glory to God!
(A special thanks to our team leader Angie! This trip would not have been the same without your leadership and guidance. Thank you for giving of yourself and of your time to make this trip happen! We love you!)
