Setting Prisoners Free
Ray and I moved to Northeast Tennessee Tri-Cities Area early 2006, and within a year we had both been sponsored to attend an Emmaus Walk. At first I wasn’t sure what it was - a long walk? - but soon I got the gist of it and realized it was a wonderful retreat in the Lord. Soon after that my husband was asked to serve on a Kairos Weekend.
Kairos Prison Ministry International serves in more than 16 countries where teams of Christian men actually go into the prison to see the inmates. A focus is on a weekend event where men hear of the One who can set them free. This is KAIROS INSIDE.
I work in KAIROS OUTSIDE where we reach out to the women who have an incarcerated family member. These women are invited to an all-expense paid pampered retreat. The structure of the weekend is the same as Kairos Inside, but with more fun surprises. The women typically come with the brakes on. It is a new experience where they do not know anyone, have already been ostracized by society, and are doing their “own time” alone and ashamed. The transformation that takes place from Friday to Sunday noon is astonishing. The reason is simply this: The Love of Christ is shown to these hurting women. Our motto is “Listen Listen, Love Love”.
The Weekend is a series of building blocks that break down and build up. By the time our Guests are ready to go home on Sunday afternoon they realize that they are not alone and that many of the Team Members have experienced exactly what they have also. They see women who have made it and ARE making it through these tough times and are blessed even so. These women are shown God’s Amazing Grace and because of that each Weekend we experience new sisters coming to Christ. It is a ministry that grabs your heart and be aware because it has the ability to disrupt your comfort zone.
You may say to yourself PRISON MINISTRY! Why would I want to get involved with something like that! After all what about the victims! When my husband was first asked about serving in the Kairos Prison Ministry, that was my first thought. I did not share my feelings with anyone but God knew. And He soon ministered to my heart by bringing me to Matthew 25:31-40. And we all know that when God speaks to us through His Word, it is a signal for obedience.
Jesus claimed “So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed!” (John 8:36) I have discovered that as Ray and I serve to bring true freedom to prisoners and their families, that our hearts are set free as well.
Kairos is a local partner of GFC with Grace men making weekly visits to a local prison and some of our women serving on the Kairos Outside Weekends several times a year. You can find out more about this ministry here.
