Mountain View Comes to Camp in the City

Last week GFC was a little more rowdy than normal. Perhaps it was the nearly 200 kids and 38 counselors that flooded our halls for another great Camp in the City experience! For the past three years, GFC has hosted Pine Cove’s Camp in the City, where counselors from all over the country come to spend a week sharing the gospel with our kids and investing in them. The week was filled with gospel chants, superheroes, giant water slides, and unending laughter. Kids saw from their counselors that it is “cool” to live for Jesus, and lives were changed.

Each year, Grace Outreach seeks to make camp possible for as many Mountain View students as possible, and this year was no different. One way we do this is providing transportation for kids that require it. Before the van headed out one day, I asked them to tell me one thing they had learned at camp that day. Here are just a few responses:

"I learned on the spider web that when we fall down God lifts us up and when we fall down again he keeps lifting us up."

"I learned that Moses was afraid of speaking and that was his weakness but God helped him with his weakness so he could take his people out of Egypt, and he'll help us too."

"I learned from the obstacle course that life can have a lot of obstacles but God will help us get through all of them."

I found it incredible that these kids learned about Jesus in the most basic ways. It wasn’t always the Bible study that taught them about Jesus; they were learning about him on the obstacle course and water slide! Every activity was turned into an opportunity to share Jesus with these kids, and they were listening. What’s amazing is that not only were these kids impacted by last week, but their families were as well. One Mountain View parent said, “The best part of camp for me was being able to see the growth of faith in my kids grow more every day during camp and every day since. I saw that the kids have started wanting to read more of the bible and have wanted to learn more from it.

Sometimes ministry is hard, and sometimes you wonder if you’re making any difference at all. But last week was a reminder to me that God uses us to plant seeds and share Jesus, but then He does all the work. Jesus is the author and perfecter of our faith. It is He who saves, not me. But I truly believe He is using GFC to bless and change our community. I’ll leave you with a few more words from that sweet Mountain View Family.

Thank you so much for bringing Camp in the City back to Grace Fellowship. The kids LOVED camp and the counselors. You guys have done so much for Mountain View and for my family. Words cannot describe how appreciative I am toward all you have done.”
