What was a beautiful spring afternoon for a baseball game turned into a harrowing ordeal for Greeneville High's pitcher, Zack Finchum. The batter's bat exploded and a chunk of the broken aluminum hit Zack in the face and neck, causing multiple fractures and profuse bleeding. All that his teammates could do was pray...and they did. As the news of Zack's accident spread, Science Hill's Coach Ryan Edwards, immediately stopped what he was doing, rounded up his players and asked the young men to pray for Zack...and they did. Coach Edwards recalls, "God used this to teach our players about the power of prayer and trusting God...these guys will never forget that!"
The Fellowship of Christian Athletes is all about influence! The influence of a Christian coach on his or her players and the influence of Christian student-athletes on their teammates and peers...all for God's glory! FCA ministers through coaches and athletes and all whom they influence, on campuses and through community sports of all kinds. Here's how another coach integrates faith with sports:
I always tell my kids, you need to find out what God wants you to do with your life. It is all about Jesus and not about you! High school kids are often worried about what they need to become and want to do it their own way. We need to do it His way.
- Coach Stacy Carter, SHHS
FCA also holds Camps for team sports and leadership development. Here's what GFC member and FCA Coach, Jeremy Bosken had to say about team camp:
The FCA Team Camp at TN Tech was one of the best athletic experiences of my coaching career. Great competition and even better Fellowship!
In addition, FCA helps equip team chaplains:
I am the chaplain/fish leader at DCHS and FCA has always been a great help with my ministry. FCA has Bibles available for students when we need them. The impact on our school by the presence of God is tremendous. Thank you FCA for your touch on our campus.
-Jerry Day, Team Chaplain, DCHS
FCA is student-led and student initiated. Here's how one young man tapped into the power of influence to impact his campus for Christ,
At UH, I discovered that our FCA needed to be built back up, so a group of my friends and me were talking and we decided to make an FCA morning huddle. We all thought it was a good idea, so we presented it to our director and he approved! Ever since we have had breakfast occasionally and we talk about our experiences and relationships with God and it is just a great experience! With FCA, we can come together and share our stories and just connect as one group. I thank God for the blessing to have FCA so I always know I have people I can talk to!
-Gabe Davis, FCA student-leader, UH
