GFC and Kairos

GFC member Debra says “My son was in prison for 2 years in Georgia where we lived at the time. I was so ashamed and felt I could tell no one. My heart was broken; crushed actually. A good friend asked if I would attend a Kairos Outside weekend. I was unsure but so glad that I did. Before my son’s incarceration I avoided anyone who had been in jail. But at this weekend my eyes were truly opened to the fact that God created all people - whether good and bad - and He loves us just the same. That does not mean you agree with their crime but you love them no matter what.”

Grace Fellowship’s growing relationship with Kairos Prison Ministry is inspiring! Debra Prevette and Glenn Rannick are two GFC members serving with Kairos and leading the charge as God’s heart for the incarcerated and GFC’s mission to reach the least and lost intersect. The mission of Kairos Prison Ministry is to bring Christ’s love and forgiveness to all incarcerated individuals, their families, and to those who work with them.

Debra has been serving with Kairos Outside since 2002. Kairos Outside ministers primarily to families of the incarcerated. Ministry weekends occur outside prison twice a year and serve those struggling to cope with this reality. Debra got involved after she was on the receiving end of the ministry. She says, “I found mothers, sisters, aunts, grandmothers, and wives who all had something in common with me. They had a loved one incarcerated. They just listened to me and the love they had for me that weekend was indescribable.”

Debra says giving of her time and energy during these weekend ministry times has been a blessing:
“I have had the honor to serve on 30+ weekends, serving in every area and loved every moment of it. God has a way of equipping you to minister where He wants you. I had to walk that road of hurt and shame, wondering what people would say before I could say, ‘I know how you feel.’ Serving these women that come on a weekend has been a huge blessing in my life. We get to give away all the love, grace and mercy that is so freely poured upon us daily.”

Glenn has been serving with Kairos Inside since 2006. He goes regularly to the Northeast Correctional Facility (NECX) in Mountain City and. He heard of Kairos while serving with Emmaus in Texas. Glenn notes, “I was active in Emmaus in Texas and had heard of Kairos. When we moved to Johnson City, I decided to try the Kairos ministry. Did it, was blessed, and fell in love with the power of the ministry.”

Kairos Outside minister’s on three long ‘Weekends’ a year. In addition, local ministry teams from the tri-cities travel weekly to NECX and ministers to 120 residents during the mid-week meetings. Glenn currently serves as President of the Kairos Inside Council, which presides over the local ministry.

He adds that his faith is growing as he sows into resident’s faith, “I am blessed more than the residents every time I go into NECX. Jesus uses this ministry to grow the Kairos’ men's faith as much as the resident’s faiths.”

“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, Because the Lord has anointed Me To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound.”  Isaiah 61:1

Much fulfillment comes from the lives that God transforms as fruit is reaped from the ministry that is sown. Debra notes, “We have the opportunity to be Jesus to them for three days. I have seen women come in on a Friday night with no hope and leave a brand new creation, a person with a renewed spirit. We have witnessed many salvations on these weekends. There are believers who have been rejected by loved ones, their church and others whose spirit is rekindled and they walk out knowing they are not alone, that they are loved. We get to see ladies go home with the JOY of the LORD.”

Glenn adds, “Men are saved, men's lives are changed. In addition, studies have shown that freed men who participated in Kairos stay out of prison at a significantly higher rate. God never ceases to amaze me. Satan shows himself as we prepare for each weekend, yet every weekend is wonderful. You think of a prison as deep, dark, full of evil and vices, and it is. But Jesus is there and He is carrying out His work. It's wonderful to watch.”

Over the past year God has raised up several more men to serve alongside Glenn in Kairos Inside, while Kairos Outside now has an open door with Mountain View Elementary. Following a meeting we had with the school administration earlier this fall, they are happy for this opportunity to serve families touched by this reality and we are now working together to serve families in this way.

“Kairos” is a New Testament Greek term that means “God’s Special Time.” No doubt God is meeting people at their point of need through these special times of ministry. And GFC members are playing a part as God transforms lives through Kairos.
