Fearfully and Wonderfully Made
GFC believes in the sanctity of life and expresses this conviction through our partnership with Agape Women’s Services. GFCers, Richard and Diana Watson, serve with this ministry and share their experiences.
I (Diana) have been volunteering with Agape for 11 years and Richard has served on the board of directors for the last 3 years. Agape is a ministry that educates women on the physical, emotional, and spiritual consequences of abortion. In relation to that, we offer parenting skills classes and adoption referrals to those who choose life for their unborn children. We also offer post-abortion healing classes.
I have had many roles in this ministry. I have counseled those who are abortion-minded, done parenting classes, Bible studies, and presently am doing financial and bookkeeping work. There can be great joy and great heartache with this type of ministry. One joy was when I answered a call from a 15-year-old girl who desired to get an abortion; but when asked if she would come in to talk, she didn’t want to. I asked if I could mail her information before she made this decision, and thankfully she consented to that. We usually deal with first names only, so I didn’t realize that she and her mother had made an appointment and came in and talked with another counselor. She chose life, and she and her mother came for the parenting classes to earn things for her baby. Over a year later, I was there when she came shopping. When I saw her name, I realized it was the one I had sent the information to. What a joy to see that precious little boy with her! But other times have been heartbreaking when no matter what you say; they were not going to choose life. We always pray that our Lord will change their hearts.
One of our greatest tools is the ultrasound machine. We always pray that when a client is coming for one, that the baby will be very active. Our Lord always answers that prayer! Many change their minds after seeing and hearing the heartbeat. One of our great needs is a new machine. Ours is older, and parts are no longer available. We also need more volunteers, especially nurses, so that we can offer full services everyday. Our largest fundraiser is beginning now in connection with Sanctity of Human Life Sunday. We exist only because many have laid up treasures in heaven by helping support us, as GFC has done for many years now.
