A Starting Point in My Faith

Have you ever wondered who God was or why bad things happen? If we are honest, at some point in our life, we all have questions just like those. When I came to GFC, I was in the midst of working through what I truly believed.

Growing up, my family attended a Roman Catholic Church, and I learned at an early age to fear God—not necessarily in a good way. Without a direct path to talk with God, I learned to confess my sins to a priest who then gave us the penitence we had to do for forgiveness. I never knew a loving and intimate God. I learned that Jesus had died on the cross for my sins, but religion grew to be a stale and unsatisfactory requirement rather than a beautiful relationship with the one who created me.

I came to GFC after my daughters began attending. A few weeks later, I heard about an 8-week small group called Starting Point. I didn’t have a clue what to expect, but I felt as though I definitely needed a starting point to my faith so I signed up. I was at a point in my life where I was lost and confused, and the Christian jargon often made understanding even more difficult.

Starting Point was the beginning of a whole new life for me. In my Starting Point small group, I found a community of people who were authentic, honest, and accepting. I found the opportunity to meet with people just like me, people who wanted to learn who God is. Through lively discussion and thoughtful questions, we learned to develop a relationship with Jesus. With each “ah ha” moment, we became even more excited because we were seeing individual growth and bringing glory to God through the process.

The group was a catalyst for me in my spiritual journey. After seeing how impactful the experience had been on my life, I joined another small group, which was hosted by the same leaders. I learned the importance of discipleship, accountability, and sharing life—the good and the bad—with others. I also began attending Re:generation last January, which delves into the broken places of our lives to find hope and healing from past hurts, bad habits, and hang-ups. I have almost completed the year-long study.

Starting Point pointed me toward God when I didn't have any direction, and it caused me to dive into Truth when I wasn’t sure where to even begin. It gave me the desire to know God more intimately, to give Him my life, and it began to show me the plans He has for me. Life still has trials and hard times, but I have learned that God is my refuge and strong tower. With the foundation God built in my life through Starting Point and faith He continues to grow, it is my hope that people can see how my life has been changed by Christ and how He is now using it for His glory.
