Finding my Ministry @ Mountain View
My name is Kathi Baty. When my husband Rock and I became a part of GFC two years ago, I was searching for a ministry to become involved with that could make a difference in our local community.
Being a stay-at-home mom for more than 20 years and an “empty nester” for the last 5 years, I really missed being involved with young children. I knew my neighbors and friends Mary Duke McCartt and Michele Ellis were serving in a backpack program at Mountain View Elementary. GFC had recently “adopted” this elementary school and was involved in helping in many areas. I went along to help one week with packing these “backpacks” for hunger insecure and homeless children at Mountain View to bring home on weekends. There are 15 items in each backpack and they were packing 42 bags every other week. Second Harvest Food Bank provided back packs the other weeks.
All I could think of as I began to help was all the years I had lovingly packed my girls lunches for school each day. I would cut the sandwiches in special shapes, send love/encouragement notes and special treats I knew would brighten their day and let them know how much I loved and cared for them. In packing the bags for the Mountain View children, I’ve been reminded of how much the food in the bags means to these kids who would otherwise go hungry on the weekends. As a result of seeing the faces of hunger and the real need of families right in our community, I knew this was where God was leading me to serve.
I have learned through GFC’s “We Love Mountain View” ministry that hunger is an everyday occurrence for many of these children. It doesn’t end on Friday when school gets out or during the summer vacation months. GFC has recognized this incredible need and as a community of believers has been providing backpack food throughout the year. The need is ongoing and the number of children we provide food to has risen to 76 each week.
A few months ago Grace stepped up its commitment by placing grocery carts near our facilities’ entrances next to the Monthly Give bins. These carts provide a weekly opportunity – in additional to the Monthly Give – to drop off a bag of food for our Mountain View ministry. You can find a list of the needed food items at the carts. We’d love for you to make a habit of picking up a few extra things at the market when you shop, bring them in and drop them off in the cart on Sunday. What a great way to express gratitude for God’s provision of your needs as you are His instrument for reaching out to others!
If you’d like to check out the variety of serving opportunities in our We Love Mountain View partnership, please visit the GFC website and click on “We love Mountain View” to get involved.
