Parent Child Dedication
There is a lot of anxiety that comes with being a new father. How much sleep will I loose? Do I really have to help change diapers? What if the she cries every time I hold her?
After a few months, as much of the craziness dies down and the new rhythms of life start to lend some sanity, a new view comes to mind. My wife and I have been charged by God with caring for, providing for, praying for, defending, teaching, rebuking, correcting, bearing with, sacrificing for, and ultimately loving His creation. As every person was, our daughter was also fearfully and wonderfully knit together. She was created in the image of God, and as He created a new child, He also created new parents.
In the process leading up to our dedication this past Sunday, Rob asked the parents, “What does dedication mean to you?” We explored the story of Hannah offering her son Samuel to the Lord and how there is a deep acknowledgement to offer back to the Lord the blessing that came from Him. While there is, of course, no saving power in a dedication in and of itself, it is a significant landmark in our lives as parents to raise our child in a manner worthy of our new calling as parents. It was an honor to join with other families to dedicate our children to the Lord on Sunday and to receive the encouragement and support of our church family.
