A Good Summer Read
I love to read! Through reading, I can gain new knowledge, learn someone’s perspective, and feel like I have accomplished something. Reading is something that I really enjoy. Not all people share my enthusiasm for a good book. Many would rather have the Reader’s Digest version of important books and thoughts than read the original.
The GFC Summer Book Club offers a little bit of both. For all avid readers out there, we have three great books about the Christian faith, the Christian life, and the Bible, and for everyone who would rather read the cliff notes – in just fifteen minutes a day for one month, you can read a great book that can propel you to greater faith in and devotion to Jesus Christ. This is an opportunity to leverage the uniqueness of summer schedules to do some in-depth studies about different aspects of the Christian faith and grow your relationship with God and fellow GFC members in the process. We have three books that you can choose from, and you can read a book in June or July, or both.
Below is a quote from two of our book facilitators, Gary and Cindy Underwood, about the value of reading in our Christian journey.
“It is indeed exciting and certainly expectation is building around facilitating the “New Christian's Handbook“ during the GFC Summer Book Club. There is simply no substitute for building a sound foundation and getting started well towards leading a new life, especially a new Christian life. Now it isn’t that we are experienced athletes, but preparing for a new direction in life can be compared to preparing for an athletic event.
As the Word says: Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 1 Corinthians 9:25 (NIV).
So, as you look forward to that crown being placed on your head someday (which BTW was bought for you at so steep a price), let’s start out together by exploring the truths of the Christian faith. Just what do we believe and why do we believe it? With all the rush of life, it feels like a race sometimes, but why does what we believe matter? These are some of the answers we will seek together so that someday we too can say:
I have fought the good fight,I have finished the race,I have kept the faith. 2 Timothy 4:7(NIV)
You can join us in the Summer Book Club by signing up online at gfcnow.com/bookclub, and you can purchase the book you want to read at our kick-off meeting THIS Sunday, June 2, from 11-11:20am in Room 401B.
We look forward to journeying with you!
