Summer Outreach Ministry Update

As the summer rolls on, so does GFC’s outreach ministry meeting physical needs of people in our community. From food support to clothing and school supply drives, our church family has been very generous in shining the light of Christ through serving and giving!

Our food support to the Mountain View community and beyond has continued through backpack food and weekly food distributions at the school. We supplied backpack food every Friday during June for approximately 200 Johnson City elementary children who attended summer school. In addition, we’ve partnered with 2nd Harvest Food Bank to provide 40 lb. boxes of food every Saturday morning at the school during the summer. This 10-week program, which began June 1, has been meeting a great need, as people are hungry both physically and spiritually.

Mobile Food Pantry Coordinator Kathi Baty comments about the July 1 distribution: “Wow...what a day! 131 families went through the mobile food pantry. We gave out 125 boxes which was all they had and then all of the fresh food and produce on the truck - EVERY BIT OF IT by 11:00am! The word is out and the need is great. We are engaging the people. They come up to the table and want the New Testaments and the Women's Devotional Prayer Book and the Kids Bible Story books...we are all out of the New Testaments. We had a great turnout from GFC volunteers and again I just have to say, they are incredible in spirit and embrace the hard work.”

The following numbers provide more perspective on the kind of impact the mobile food pantry distributions have made - To sum up, through June we have served 242 households, 666 individuals, and 240 children. We have provided 30,246 pounds of produce, dairy products, bread and boxed/canned goods, etc. across those 5 distributions!

Our Monthly Give ministry continues through the summer. In June during our Box Top & Used Printer Cartridge Drive in support of Mountain View we collected approximately 200 printer cartridges and several hundred box top/soup labels. Funds from those redeemable items will be a real blessing as the school receives those proceeds this fall.

Our July Monthly Give is a ‘Back 2 School Supply Drive’ that will benefit local ministry partner Good Samaritan Ministries. Each summer ‘Good Sam’ fills and distributes over 1000 backpacks filled with school supplies to area children.

And speaking of Good Sam, you need to know the participation level for our May Monthly Give of used clothing in support of their ministry was phenomenal! Resalable items would be placed in their Heaven Sent Thrift Store, while any un-wearable items would be recycled for funds. All monies go to support their outreach to the community. In monetary terms, this give will mean thousands of dollars to Good Sam.

In a thank you letter we just received from Good Samaritan Director of Administration Vernon Wells, the generosity and heart expressed by our church family in numbers is huge! Writes Mr. Wells, “We are grateful to you for the support for the poor in the contribution of 2000 pairs of pants, 6170 pairs of shorts, 572 dresses, 158 pairs of shoes, 240 purses, 48 swimsuits, 567 sweaters, 328 coats, 131 skirts, 54 pairs of socks, 16 blankets, 16 bracelets, 8 pair of gloves, 21 belts, and 23 hats to Good Samaritan Ministries. It is an answer to prayer and will enable us to serve others in need.”

Know that your generosity in giving bears much fruit in the kingdom of God. And give we have! Thank you for helping share the love of God through these tangible expressions!

“Let your light so shine among men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:16
