Dedicate: To Devote to a Purpose

When we learned there would be a Parent Child Dedication coming up, we knew we wanted to be a part of it. We were excited to take this action step of love for our daughter. The First Steps class, which is specifically for those participating in Parent Child Dedication, was full of resources for parenting and shepherding our children's hearts, and it was a great time to get to know some other parents with young children. As parents desiring to grow our children in the love of Jesus, how wonderful it is to be with other parents who are on the same journey.

Dedicate::{verb=action word} to devote to a particular task or purpose; as being issued in or performed in someone's honor; to formally open or unveil; to ceremonially assign

On Sunday, November 22, 2015, our family participated in the Grace Fellowship Church Parent Child Dedication Service. We did this in order to formally promise to devote the parenting of our child, Kathryn Ann Nuan Hagemeier, to our Lord Jesus Christ. In this, we mean that we promise to Him to do our best to love this child as He does (1 John 4:19), to teach her His ways (Deuteronomy 6:7) and His word (2 Timothy 3:16)... to grow her up in a way that would allow her to know Him, love Him, and desire to serve Him.

Katie Ann (as we call her) came to our family in May through adoption. This is a picture of all our children on the day we received Katie Ann in China. The kids' shirts read "Love is an Action" and they certainly showed it on this day. I love how working through the process of adoption has taught us in a deeper way how Christ loves us.

One of my favorite verses, which has rung loudly in my ears over and over, is Psalm 126:3: "The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy” (NIV). I heard it over and over again on Katie Ann's dedication day. "For this child we have prayed" (1 Samuel 1:27 ESV), and we are so thankful.

And so we desire to come to action to dedicate our child{ren} to the Lord. And we desire to do so in this community of believers so that we might be held accountable and receive good teaching and counsel. We believe this is part of God's design for the church. (Proverbs 27:17)

We are grateful for Grace Fellowship Church and so appreciate the love and support shown to our family. Thank you, Church, for being Christ's hands and feet to us and to so many others. Glory be to God.
