Monday Memo - August 11

With a flourish we concluded our TEXTING series yesterday as Gene Getz riveted our attention on the work of the Holy Spirit in the recording and preserving the Scriptures, so that we hold in our hands the very word of God in our own language! Just try to imagine life without this revelation. God has communicated clearly who He is, who we are, what's wrong in our world today, where history is headed and that we have a purpose and direction to our lives. What would life be if we were clueless about these questions?

As you know, our friend Benjamin Kisoni continues to face major life questions about his future. I've been tracking closely with Benjamin in this process and want to bring you up to date on some recent and serious developments. Benjamin fled his homeland of the DRCongo 5 years ago because his brother was assassinated and now his life was in danger. His application for asylum became the victim of poor legal representation and was rejected. For the past 10 months he has been without legal status as he works with a new attorney to appeal his case. A week and a half ago he reported into the Immigration office at their request. He was given until August 27th to either obtain a judge's ruling to approve his re-application for asylum, or be prepared on that day to leave the country. His attorney is preparing the appeal and will file by this Friday. He is also filing a request for an extension in case a decision cannot be obtained by the 27th. We believe, and his attorney strongly believes, that he has a viable and solid case for asylum. If he were to return to the Congo, he would be in grave danger.

Benjamin continues to be a remarkable model of what it means to rest one's life in God's hands. The Lord has faithfully shepherded him thus far and we are trusting with Benjamin that God's hand of grace will open a door.

Would you join us in our Grace Fellowship community to pray daily for Benjamin?

While many of these serious questions for Benjamin seem to be hanging in the balance, God's Word - given to us and preserved for us by the Holy Spirit - declares that He is actively at work in and through these circumstances for His good purposes and glory.

'Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.'     - Isaiah 41:10
