Peru Team - Day Five

All too quickly, our last day at the project came today. When we arrived at the center, Pastor Daniel's wife told us about two families that we were going to visit and pray with. My group visited the home of Rafael. His mother has diabetes and at 42 years old is starting to lose her eyesight. When we arrived at the home, the mother was actually at the hospital and his grandmother let us in. The mother had some very serious pain in her back and rushed to the hospital just that morning. She is already going there for dialysis three times a week. The father and grandmother have diabetes as well, so it is likely Rafael may have it as well. It was very sad to see them struggle, but it was very encouraging to pray with the grandmother and go to the Great Physician for help. I kept thinking, would we go visit a home like this simply to pray with a hurting family? The church's great attention and deep care for their congregation was obvious.

The rest of the day was spent giving our last good byes, having those last sweet conversations, playing our last of silly games, and just affirming the children and project staff. It was unplanned and unstructured, but it was unforgettable. Each class sang us a song and presented us with gifts, and we could feel their love and gratitude. In the end, when we all gathered to say our final words, there were many tears, tears of joy and sadness. We are glad that we have strengthened many relationships and formed many new ones, but we are sad to leave a place that has become so dear to us so quickly. We are all so thankful though for the work that Pastor Daniel and his church our doing in their community, and we hope to encourage them from afar.

Tomorrow is our last day, and we will have a child fun day at the zoo! Our flight leaves at 1 am Friday morning so that we arrive home at 1 pm Friday. Please pray for strength, rest, and safe travels.
