The God Who Heals
Hope Heals: A True Story of Overwhelming Loss and an Overcoming Love chronicles the journey of Katherine and Jay Wolf through stroke, recovery, and healing of wounded things. While their story is not prescriptive (“Ten Simple Steps to Overcome Loss”), it is an invitation to study your own story in light of their circumstances and the positive choices they made to trust God and move forward when faced with devastating loss. They saw their story as a “microcosm of everyone’s story and our losses and gains as representative of the human experience.” Their faith example is an other-than-earthly one rooted in an unwavering belief in a faithful God.
“God was inviting us into a deeper relationship with Him. He was inviting us into a relationship of trust, built not on what He would give us but on who He was.”
Joining the “Hope Heals” women’s Bible study at GFC this semester was my first venture in community since my husband, Tim, suffered a disabling stroke in the Fall of 2014. With trembling, I chose to look my grief full in the face for one of the first times with an ensemble of fellow strugglers.
Over the course of the weeks of our study, my heart of entitlement was challenged. Like the prodigal’s older brother (Luke 15) or the workers who had been in the vineyard since the morning hours (Matthew 20), I had been faithful in His service since childhood. After all these years of work for Him how could He do this to me? Should He not bless me with more years of tranquility for all my busy-ness for Him? I’m beginning to grasp that my ways are not His ways nor my economy, His economy. Growing in intimacy with my Creator far exceeds the need for my life to work according to plan.
The experience was both painful and liberating and as my heart was exposed to His grace, He proved to be enough to handle my situation. In the sweet company of women of faith, I felt safe and cared for. Together we ventured into what it would look like to walk into a deeper relationship with the God who heals.
