Father’s Day 2023

When we think of a great dad we think of someone who sets a good example.  Children watch all the time, but no dad is perfect. When Jesus taught the Sermon on the Mount, He showed that our heavenly Father is to be our example.  No one of us can be perfect, but we can see the illustration of God’s relationship with His children through a father’s relationship with his child. “As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him.” Psalm 103:13

Why do we perceive God to be so unmoved or unimpressed by our heartfelt attempts at obedience, even when imperfect?  What sort of father looks at his daughter’s homemade birthday card and complains that the color scheme is all wrong? There is an appreciation for intention and attempt.

If you are a parent, you know the profound love you have for your children. It is just there and can’t be expressed in words. You know that you would go to great lengths to save them from harm. The same is true with God. He is our heavenly Father who cares deeply for us.

This Father’s Day, reflect on your relationship with your father, whether positive or negative. How did that relationship resemble the model God gave us? How did it differ?

Take a moment to pray for your father, other fathers, and people with strained relationships with their fathers.
