Jesus, Demons, and Disease

Luke 4:31-44

After delivering an explosive sermon in Nazareth where Jesus identifies his purpose as Messiah to bring good news to the broken and freedom to the captives, Jesus relocates to Capernaum where this ministry begins taking place. In these verses, Luke highlights one of the key traits of Jesus’ teaching and ministry – authority! Over interpreting Scripture, over demons, over disease… But the people in these stories demonstrate a myriad of reactions to this aspect of who Jesus is. Like them, we get to decide, ‘how will WE respond to the authority of Jesus?’

“A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher… Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us.” C.S. Lewis
