Prophecy and Speaking in Tongues

1 Corinthians 14

In chapters 11-14 of 1 Corinthians, Paul addresses multiple problems that are popping up in the gathering of the church at Corinth. And in chapter 14, he tackles one that feels both confusing and intimidating to many of us – prophecy and speaking in tongues! It’s important to look at this text through a historical- grammatical lens as we seek to apply it our lives today. Though there’s quite a bit of disagreement among scholars, theologians, and believers about some of the details in the passage, the overall point is quite clear. God is a God of order! And order in the church worship service context enables us to experience His presence through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Prophecy = Declaring the Word of the Lord.

Speaking in tongues = the Spirit-empowered ability to speak in languages unknown to the user.

God brings order out of disorder so He can be with His people.

Prayer Point
• Pray that as a body of believers, we would deeply desire and take active steps to join the Holy Spirit in what He’s doing in and through the ministry of GFC.
