Be a Helper

“My mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’ To this day, especially in times of disaster, I remember my mother’s words, and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers – so many caring people in this world.” Fred Rogers used these words to explain how his mother guided and soothed him, when as a child, he would see frightening things on the news.

It’s not bad advice for adults either. Whenever something is going wrong, there are always people who are jumping in to action to try to help. Some people do this as part of their occupation, while others of us have the opportunity to volunteer or take small, sometimes unnoticed actions to help. As we grow into adults, we learn not just to look for the helpers, but to be a helper.

In our community, we benefit from many people who help others. Doctors, nurses, hospital, and medical staff have been helping care for the sick and now provide immunizations against Covid-19. Teachers have been helping our children learn and cope with life in a uniquely stressful time period. So many others are helping too, but we want to encourage these local helpers, or heroes, right now.

Yesterday in the worship service, Matt launched Help for Heroes, where we can pray, provide baskets, and encourage local healthcare workers and teachers. Here are specific ways you can be a helper:

• Use our guide to pray at home or drive to the Johnson City Medical Center to pray from your car on Sunday evenings from 5pm-5:20 through February 14.
• Provide snacks, drinks, and treats to thank our teachers and healthcare workers.
• Write a note to encourage a local helper and let them know they are cared for by you and God.
