New GFC Staff: Meet Alf Nelson!

As my friends would tell you, the best thing about me is my family. Allison and I met in high school and will celebrate our 29th anniversary this summer. We have two wonderful sons, Athan and Aiden. Athan and his wife Eryn recently graduated from LSU and now live in Baton Rouge, while Aiden is a sophomore at the University of Alabama.
Originally from New Orleans, Allison and I were excited to return to Johnson City in June 2023 to be near friends who are family to us. We moved to Johnson City from Dallas, Texas, in 2003 when I joined the staff at GFC. After six years, we relocated back to New Orleans in 2009 to be part of a church planting team.
While in New Orleans, we served two church plants in communities devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. In addition to my role as a pastor, we renovated several “Katrina houses” in our neighborhood, and I also worked as an independent handyman.
We are thrilled to be part of what God is doing in and through GFC, and I feel honored and humbled by the opportunity to serve our community once again. My primary role is to shepherd our staff team as we work together to equip and facilitate our church body.
As empty nesters, Allison and I enjoy spending lots of time together and with friends, and we cherish every moment we get to spend with our kids. In my free time, I enjoy fixing things, hiking (but not the extreme kind), working on puzzles, eating sour Albanese gummy bears, and rooting for the Alabama Crimson Tide and the New Orleans Saints (though not so enjoyable in recent years).
